Royal Visit Celebrates Community at Hafan Yr Afon and Oriel Davies Gallery

Their Royal Highnesses Prince William and Catherine, Princess of Wales visited Newtown and Llanidloes ahead of St David’s day celebrations – calling in at not one, but two of our past projects that sit at the heart of community life in Mid Wales.

Despite the rain, the welcome was nothing short of warm with hundreds making their way to Newtown to see the Royals.

Their visit began at Hafan Yr Afon – the vibrant riverside community hub we were very proud to deliver, and the winner of the Constructing Excellence Wales Building Project of the Year 2023 award. Designed as a space for connection, support and opportunity, it was fantastic to see the centre alive with local groups, volunteers and families showcasing the community spirit that defines the area.

The Royal couple then travelled to Oriel Davies Gallery, which we refurbished in January 2025. The scope of the project included a new insulated roof, upgraded glazing and a full internal refurbishment – improving comfort, sustainability and accessibility while protecting the character of this much-loved cultural venue. During the visit, Their Royal Highnesses met with representatives involved in a project supporting the wellbeing of children and young people across the region – a powerful reminder of how thoughtfully designed spaces can enable meaningful change.

Seeing these buildings not just standing, but thriving – filled with conversation, creativity and compassion – is what community-focused construction is all about. We are incredibly proud that both venues chosen for this visit reflect the creativity, strength, and ambition of the Mid Wales region.
