Sustainability is about more than reducing emissions, it’s also about finding practical ways to minimise waste, make better use of materials and create a positive impact in the communities where we work.
A recent example is the new bug hotel at Holmer Lake Community Orchard, where we provided surplus timber to support the community project. Working alongside local volunteers, Capgemini UK and Telford Drainage Solutions, the timber has been given a new purpose as a habitat for bees, beetles, butterflies and other insects, supporting biodiversity at the orchard.
The project is a great example of how surplus construction materials can be put to good use rather than becoming waste, creating a lasting benefit for the local environment and community.
Making better use of surplus materials
Our approach to surplus materials extends beyond individual community projects. We also continue to support Maesbury Metals in Oswestry, providing used pallets which they transform into new products while creating opportunities for adults with learning disabilities to develop skills, build confidence and showcase what they can achieve.
By providing used pallets that can be repurposed, we are helping to keep materials in use for longer while supporting a local organisation and its wider social purpose.
These initiatives form part of our wider approach to responsible resource management. All Pave Aways employees receive sustainability training, including guidance on correct waste management and the importance of reducing, reusing and recycling materials wherever possible.
Reducing our carbon footprint
Alongside our approach to waste and materials, we are continuing to take practical steps to reduce our operational carbon emissions. Our sustainability strategy includes a target to halve our Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 2030, compared with our 2022 baseline.
Measures already introduced include electric vans and a van-share scheme, alongside initiatives to improve waste management and resource efficiency across our operations.
While projects such as a community bug hotel may seem small in isolation, they demonstrate the practical approach we take to sustainability: looking for opportunities to reduce waste, make better use of resources and deliver a positive impact wherever we can.
