Wellington Leisure Centre & Civic Centre Decarbonisation
A major decarbonisation and refurbishment project at Wellington Civic and Leisure Centre is now complete, following similar investment programmes we completed for the council at Oakengates Leisure Centre (2024) and Newport Fitness and Swimming Centre (2022). The works focused on modernising the building’s infrastructure to reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions, supporting Telford & Wrekin Council’s commitment to become carbon neutral by 2030.
Key improvements included an air source heat pump and a new energy-efficient hot water system were installed to reduce the building’s energy consumption and carbon emissions. The pool hall received new roof and wall insulation, improving thermal efficiency and comfort for visitors. Ventilation systems were upgraded to ensure a healthier, more comfortable swimming environment.
The changing areas were refurbished, including the installation of new lockers and additional cubicles to enhance visitor convenience. The pool environment was improved with upgraded lighting, refurbishment of the pool promenade, and a full redecoration programme.
The investment ensures both sustainability benefits and an enhanced experience for members and pay-as-you-go users.
Councillor Carolyn Healy, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods, Planning and Sustainability, said:
Our commitment to increasing energy efficiency and reducing our carbon footprint across our leisure portfolio is evident through these major investment works. This third site in three years will see real sustainability benefits, as well as an improved experience for our members and visitors.
Councillor Angela McClements, Cabinet Member for Leisure, Tourism, Culture & the Arts, added:
We are really looking forward to welcoming swimmers back! This investment creates a better experience and refurbished facilities for our members and visitors, while also supporting our journey toward a greener, more sustainable future.
During the works, the swimming pool, health suite, and changing village were temporarily closed, while the fitness suite remained open. Swim4Life lessons and Aquafit classes were temporarily relocated, resuming at Wellington from 1st September.
The project also included a new Mechanical and Electrical package, featuring a high-voltage power inlet connected to heat pumps on a new external slab area, further strengthening the facility’s energy efficiency.
Wellington Civic and Leisure Centre is open seven days a week and forms part of Telford & Wrekin Leisure’s portfolio, which includes six other fitness centres, Telford Ice Rink, Telford Snowboard & Ski Centre, Telford Town Park, and Telford Tennis Centre.
