Shrewsbury Flaxmill Maltings Level 2 Office Fit-Out
Shortlisted for the 2025 Constructing Excellence Midlands Retrofit Award, the transformation of Level 2 at the iconic Shrewsbury Flaxmill Maltings showcases the power of heritage-led regeneration done right.
As the world’s first iron-framed building and a site of global significance, working within the Grade I-listed Main Mill required a meticulous approach. Commissioned by Marley Risk Consultants, we delivered a high-quality office fit out that not only respected the Flaxmill’s historic character, but also met the modern needs of a thriving commercial premises.
All design and construction interventions were fully reversible and aligned with Historic England’s strict conservation requirements. The project demanded careful scheduling to avoid disruption in this live, multi-use site, which includes a museum and multiple tenants. We implemented tailored logistics, early-morning work phases, and robust health and safety procedures to ensure minimal impact on daily operations.
The result is a beautifully finished, functional workspace that celebrates the building’s industrial heritage – including exposed cast-iron features – while delivering a modern, flexible environment for its users.
Geraint Roberts of Marley Risk Consultants commented:
“Pave Aways did a brilliant job. The Flaxmill is a Grade I industrial monument, and they not only met but exceeded the quality standards set by Historic England.”
This retrofit stands as a model for how historic buildings can be sensitively adapted for the future – blending conservation, functionality, and design excellence on time and on budget.
